Higher Education

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is responsible for post-school education and training holistically. This includes aspects of skills development which had previously resided in the Department of Labour. 

  1. Vocational Education 
    • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges offer high quality vocational education and training programmes.
  2. Community Education
    • Community Education and Training colleges target post school youth and adults who wish to raise the base for further learning, improve their skills for employability and/or progression to opportunities in the TVET colleges and university education.
  3. University Education
    • Universities are higher education learning institutions that provide a wide range of theory intensive education with emphasis on academic knowledge and research. There are numerous qualifications you can obtain from a university.
  4. Skills Development
    • The national skills development programmes are implemented through the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).
       

Open Learning

Open learning is a way of studying that allows people to learn where and when they want, and to receive and send written work by either mail or email. This form of learning addresses learning barriers and promotes access.
