Finding careers  of interest to you which are related to what you studied

As the saying goes, “The only thing that is constant is change” - Heraclitus. It is a reality that our careers are always changing, whether it is intentional or unintentional. It is important to always keep track of your interests in relation to your career. As human beings we are always evolving, our interests may change, intensify or completely divert. When this happens, we need to be able to apply that change smoothly in all areas of our lives, especially our careers.

For example if you are a doctor by profession, but with time you realise that the passion you once had for this particular career has changed, it is important to explore this change, the causes of the change and to devise a new career path for yourself that will keep you professionally satisfied. In an instance where you have developed a passion for writing, you can look at ways to incorporate both careers into one that will bring you much needed career satisfaction. You can even consider having 2 careers that are not necessarily related to one another.

Finding careers related to what you studied in line with your interest

It is important to match your interests with your career. Whichever qualification you have studied opens a wide range of doors to numerous career possibilities, you need to keep an open mind and be open to taking up opportunities that are different from the norm. There are many ways one can change their career, you can decide that you want to be a specialist in your field, move up the ranks into management positions or diversify your skillset.

If you want to be a specialist in a particular area within your field, you can look at expanding your knowledge. Look into furthering your studies, attending more seminars that are in line with the interest you want to pursue, join communities of practice that engage on topics of interests to you and create networks that assist you in making your way into your area of interest.

If you want to move up the ranks into management or executive positions you need to consider developing your leadership skills and business skills. This can happen largely through finding yourself a mentor that is skilled in leadership and business. You can also develop your leadership and business skills by furthering your studies by pursuing a business related postgraduate qualifications like Masters in Business Administration, Masters in Business Leadership, etc. You can also consider attending business training courses that include a large component of leadership in business, invest in such courses so that you are able to enhance your business leadership skills.

If you want to diversify your skillset you need to gain a clear understanding of how you want to diversify your skills and why. This has to tie in with your career goals. If you would like to combine 2 skills in order to follow a career path that is twofold you can consider gaining new skills that are not related to your career but can be used within your career. For example, if you are an engineer and have an interest in writing you can become a writer for a magazine (provided your writing skills are good too) that writes about engineering news, events and occurrences. You can use your writing skills combined with your engineering know how to write solid, well researched and interesting articles. In this manner you have diversified your skills but within your career path.
