Choosing a Higher Education Institution

Choosing a Higher Education Institution is one of the most important things in your child's career development journey. Most learners are faced with the same questions after receiving their matric results; "what are the top factors they should consider when choosing a higher education institution that will be best for them?"

The question lies on what is most important to them and being a student they need time to really evaluate what aspects of an institution are needed in order for them to be happy as they go through their studies and also what is needed for them to feel fulfilled once they've graduated and start their career. For example, what kind of college or university experiences do they want to have, in or out of the classroom? In which types of learning environments will they be most likely to excel: distance learning verses on-campus learning? Does the school offer the qualification or options they want? There are many factors to consider when you are helping your child choose a higher education Institution and the list below will be a guide for you as a parent to help you help your child evaluate the institutions' (college or university) options:

Registration and Accreditation

If your child wants to have a qualification that will help them to create value in today's job market, it is important to make sure that the college or university they are interested in is registered and accredited to render their services and the qualifications thereof. The institutions are required to obtain registration from the Department of Higher Education and Training and the qualifications they are offering must be accredited by the Quality Council (s) namely; (Umalusi, QCTO or CHE) and be registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). You can find out if a college is accredited by contacting the DHET call centre on: 0800 87 2222 or contact the career development services on: SMS: or "please call me" to 072 204 5056.

Admissions requirements

It is also important to help your child know about the admission requirements of the higher institution of learning they would like to further their studies with. The admissions requirements of an institution determine the percentage of applicants who are likely to be admitted, this will also indicates your child's chances of being accepted at an institution. As a result there is a high rate of competitiveness of admission requirements, therefore it is important to advice your child to ensure an effective pass rate.

Types of qualifications offered

An institutions admissions office would be able to answer any questions your child or you as a parent may have concerning the availability of the type of degree your child would like to pursue. Their website or brochure will also have a wealth of information. Be sure to help your child and also you as a parent to read about the available programs and take note of the curriculum, credit requirements, and level of completion, like passing with cum - laude.

Location

One of the most important factors to consider when helping your child choose an institution is the location. If you feel concerned about where your child will be during their college or university years, it is very important to timeously help your child look for and find a place that will be convenient for them, in terms of; safety, the proximity to the Institution and etcetera. Remember that your child is likely to end up attending college or university for four or more years before they earn their degree or qualification so it is important to help guide and advice your child in ensuring that they are comfortable with the location where they'll be living.

Cost

Costs is one of the most important things to consider when choosing an institution of higher learning, and you as a parent ‘will need to determine how much tuition you can afford to pay prior to your child selecting one. The costs between public and private universities have risen considerably in recent years. When considering an institution, you need to ensure that you and your child are aware of all the costs that are associated with studying, not just the cost of tuition. There are textbook costs, accommodation costs, study fees, food and other expenses, and these can all add up to a whole lot very quickly. Therefore it is important that you as a parent and your child familiarize yourselves with all the Financial Aid Opportunities that are available.

Academic Support Services

Most colleges and universities have their own systems, with on-campus accommodation, libraries, and health centers, cafeterias, shopping facilities, computer labs, churches and counselors readily accessible to students. Academic counselors are also available for students who are seeking career or academic guidance. Some institutions also offer free psychology counselors in the event that you are suffering from anxiety, depression, or just need to have a professional to talk with, thus, as a parent it is important to be aware of such services so as to be able to know how to guide and refer your child when they need help.
