First Year Students

Congratulations on embarking on this exciting journey of higher education. Your first year at the university or college of your choice will be full of new experiences, challenges, and opportunities for personal and academic growth. This page is designed to provide you with some tips and advices you need to navigate your first year successfully.

Attend Orientation

  • It is important to attend first years' orientation as they will help you settle in. This is where you will learn about campus facilities, student services, academic expectations, and how to make the most of your time at the college/university. Orientation is also a good place to meet fellow students, faculty members, and staff who are there to support you throughout your journey.

Stay Organised:

  • Use a planner or digital tools to keep track of assignments, exams, and important dates.
  • Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Create a study schedule that balances classes, study time, and personal activities.

Manage Your Time Wisely:

  • Prioritise your tasks based on deadlines and importance.
  • Avoid procrastination by setting specific goals and dedicating focused time to your studies.
  • Don't forget to schedule breaks and leisure activities to recharge.

Engage Actively in Classes:

  • Attend all your classes and actively participate in discussions.
  • Take thorough notes and review them regularly to reinforce your learning.
  • Don't hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification when needed.

Seek Support:

  • Build relationships with your lecturers, professors, advisors, and fellow students/peers. They're here to help you succeed.
  • If you're struggling academically, consider seeking tutoring or academic support services.
  • Reach out to counseling services if you're facing emotional or mental challenges.

Explore Diverse Opportunities:

  • Attend campus events, workshops, and lectures to broaden your horizons.
  • Join student clubs, organizations, or sports teams to meet new people and develop new skills.

Take Care of Your Well-being:

  • Prioritise sleep (but not over sleep because you are there to study), exercise, and eat a balanced diet to maintain your physical health.
  • Practice stress-relief techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.
  • Seek help if you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or struggling with mental health (check the Student Support Services Department for such)

Stay Curious and Open-Minded:

  • Embrace new subjects and ideas. Tertiary is a time for intellectual exploration.
  • Challenge your assumptions and engage in respectful discussions with fellow students/peers.

Set Realistic Expectations:

  • Recognise that it's normal to face challenges and setbacks. Perfection is not the goal.
  • Focus on personal growth and improvement rather than comparing yourself to others.

Develop Good Study Habits:

  • Find a productive study environment that minimises distructions.
  • Use active learning techniques like summarising, teaching, and self-testing.
  • Review your notes regularly instead of cramming before exams.

Plan for the Future:

  • Start exploring potential career paths and consider internships or job-shadowing opportunities.
  • Use your university's career services or our Career Development Services for guidance on resume building, interview preparation, and job search support.

Remember, your first year is a learning experience in more ways than one. It's okay to make mistakes, ask for help, and adapt your strategies as you go. Enjoy the journey, make lasting memories, and take full advantage of the incredible opportunities that university/college life has to offer!
